Hold Your Horses review

There are plenty of themes that slot designers continually keep going back to for their latest games. We’ve seen lots of games with themes such as Egypt, pirates and ancient legends. Animals are another popular theme and here we have another equine game in Novomatic’s ‘Hold Your Horses.’

The first thing that will hit you when playing this slot is its look. This really does have impressive artwork that will add a great deal to your enjoyment of the game.

Hold Your Horses has five reels, three rows of symbols and you can play up to 40 paylines. It’s up to you to decide how many paylines to activate and your stake. This can cost you between £0.01 and £80.

There are five different horses featured in the game. There’s a white stallion, one that is completely black (probably a black beauty), a brown one with a light brown mane, another brown one but with a white mane and a brown one with a dark brown mane. They all look excellent and you can tell a lot of work has been put into this slot. We also get the ten to Ace playing card symbols.

Keep a close eye on the symbols because some have just the one horse and others have two. Those with a pair of horses will count for two single horses on a payline increasing your chances of getting larger wins. You get a winning combination when at least five or more horses appear on an activated payline. The top payout for each of the horse symbols is for ten of a kind. Ten of the white horse has a 200x multiplier.

Also note the fact that some of the horse symbols only appear on certain reels. The single white horse and single brown horse with the light brown mane can only be seen on the first, fourth and fifth reels. The other two single brown horses are on the second, fourth and fifth reels only. The single all black horse only appears on the third, fourth and fifth reels. All the double horse symbols can crop up on any of the reels.

The wild symbol in the game is the Hold Your Horses logo. This can substitute for other symbols in the game to present you with some winning combinations. Five of the wild symbols pays 500x your line bet, the top prize in the game. It’s not possible for the wild to sub for the Bonus Symbol which plays a key role in triggering the bonus game, more about that in a moment.

Make sure you understand all the rules to the game before playing it. This can be done by accessing the paytable. Also have some free games just to see how the various features in the game work.

Bonus Games

To trigger the Hold Your Horses Bonus Feature, you need go get the entire set of reels filled with Bonus symbols. To start with you need to get Bonus Symbols stacked on the first reel. Then all the Bonus Symbols on the screen get locked in place. The reels are then respun and any new Bonus Symbols again become locked. This continues until the whole set of reels is filled with Bonus Symbols or a respin doesn’t result in a Bonus Symbol appearing ending your chances of triggering the bonus round.

If you are lucky enough to get into the bonus round, then you win a total of 15 free spins. When you get to the 15th and final free spin you have the chance of re-triggering them. This can happen up to ten consecutive times so you could end up playing with 150 free spins. If that does happen I reckon you should play every lottery game under the sun that day because you’re being really lucky.

The game also has a gamble feature. It’d have been nice for it to be horse-related in some way but it’s the usual playing card game. It crops up after you get a winning combination and offers you the chance to double that win. You can lose that win if you make the wrong choice so be careful with this.

Conclusion

I love the look of this game and also the fact it’s a little bit different from others I’ve played. The double horses feature and the way in which you trigger the bonus game make this really interesting. It gets even better if you can keep re-triggering the free spins. Be wary of the gamble feature though.
