Just why this slot from Novomatic is called ‘Grand Slam Casino’ I’m not too sure. Having read the title, I expected something that was sports related, probably a tennis or golf game. That’s not the case though, instead it’s time to take a bit of a trip back in time for a good old fashioned fruit machine.
Fruit machines were the order of the day for many decades and definitely the ones to play when I was growing way back in the 70s (yep I’m old!). Almost every slot that I used to see in the arcades and later pubs/clubs (once I’d turned 18, honest), was dominated by symbols of fruit with a few 7’s and bells joining them on the reels.
This slot may have those old symbols back but it maintains a fair few of the features that you are all used to playing nowadays. That means there are five reels and three rows of symbols compared to the 3×3 grid in the old days. There are also a total of nine paylines, a big increase on most of those I used to play that only had the one. The winning combinations in this game are paid on matching symbols in a left to right direction.
Those of you who are used to a regular diet of free spins, pick ‘em games and spectacularly designed symbols might be a bit disappointed with this game. It’s still very much worth playing but is likely to be popular with those of you out there who are fairly new to slot games and want to ease their way into playing them by starting with something reasonably straightforward.
Symbols in the game are the good old favourites with cherries, lemons, plums, strawberry, oranges and watermelons plus four-leaf clovers and bells.
There’s a wild symbol here which is the blue star. This can help boost your account balance by substituting for other symbols and hopefully getting you a succession of winning combinations. As talented as it is the wild cannot substitute for the scatter symbol which is the GS Logo. That’s because the scatter also has its many uses and can get that account balance of yours moving on upwards. More about that in a moment.
Before you start playing the game, ensure you try to find out as much as you can about how the game works. You can do this by checking out the paytable which is packed with information about the game. Also try out some free games to see the game in action.
If you get three or more of the GS scatter symbols, then you receive a random win. Just how high that win can be depends on how many scatters you get on the reels. Three gets a win of between 5x and 20x your stake, four takes that up to between 10x and 50x and a fab five means between 20x and 100x your bet.
Also in this game there’s the gamble feature. When you get a winning combination that’s good news of course but now comes the chance to gamble it if you so wish. It’s not compulsory so if you want you could just carry onto the next spin with an increased account balance. If you decide to take the gamble, then it’s a question of guessing the colour of the next playing card. It’s either going to be red or black so it’s a 50/50 bet. Get it right to double your win, make the wrong decision and wave goodbye to that win.
It’s nostalgia time and there is plenty to enjoy about this retro game from Novomatic. It has a good look to It and there are some good wins to be had. The lack of a free spins round is bound to disappoint some but the scatter bonus is still useful. Just be careful with that gamble feature though.
