Chicago review

Well this definitely isn’t based on the musical of the same name. If it is then Catherine Zeta Jones has really let herself go. It’s based on the American city of Chicago and rather than female prisoners we have some gangsters in a strange looking game from Novomatic.

It’s not the most colourful game, it’s like an old black and white gangster movie really, the kind you’d expect to see James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart would appear in.

The game has a total of five reels, three rows of symbols and 20 paylines that are hopefully going to be full of winning combinations for you. That’s not a fixed amount so before each spin of the reels you need to decide how many to activate and what your stake is going to be. Playing the game can range from £0.01 all the way up to £100 so high rollers will be keen to try and win some big prizes here.

The backdrop to the game features the city of Chicago. Not sure if it’s windy or not but it usually is in that area. We get to see what was known as the Sears Tower at a time when gangsters ruled the roost in the city and prohibition meant a swift half down the pub wasn’t the order of the day unless you fancied breaking the law, which many did.

The symbols are well drawn and certainly add a lot to the attraction of the game. There’s a gangster’s moll, a sheriff, a gangster smoking a cigar.

We also get the nine to Ace playing card symbols, at least one too many I reckon as I’d prefer to see more theme-related symbols.

The wild is the Sears Tower and can substitute for other symbols to get you winning combinations. It’s not able to do that for the scatter symbol though which is the car that’s probably been purchased through ill-gotten gains by a gangster. This can pay you 100x your total bet if five of them appear anywhere on the reels. As you’ll soon read, it’s also the key to getting you into the bonus game.

There’s the paytable which is an important read if you want to know exactly how the game runs. It tells you how much each winning combination pays, for example five of the wild symbols gets you 5000x your line stake.

Bonus Games

The free spins round is activated when you get at least three of the scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. That means activating high numbers of paylines isn’t necessary to stand a chance of getting the 12 free spins up for grabs.

The free spins round also includes the Bottle Shooting Bonus. When you get a win during the free spins round you can shoot down some bottles with the aim of getting some multipliers. It’s also possible to re-trigger the bonus round to keep the wins coming. All you need to do for that to happen is see the scatter symbols appear in the required numbers again.

There’s also a gamble feature here that you can decide to play after a win in the base game. All rather simple here, you plump for the next playing card to be either red (heart/diamond) or black (clubs/spades). Get it right and you can double your win up to five times. Get it wrong and you’ve just lost that win you were so happy about a minute ago. Best to keep play of this down to a minimum.

Conclusion

I’ve always enjoyed a good old gangster movie though the idea of prohibition doesn’t exactly thrill me. Well this slot from Novomatic definitely has plenty of appeal to it. I like the quirky black and white symbols and hopefully the wins you’ll get will put some added colour into your life. The bonus games can be lucrative as well but just be careful with the gamble feature and try to keep your winnings not give them back.
