Time to take a trip to the Wild West plain and the days when herds of buffalo roamed free. That’s the theme in this successful game from Novomatic that gives you plenty of chances to get some good wins.
‘Buffalo Thunder’ has transparent reels and that allows us to fully see the plain in the background. There doesn’t actually appear to be any buffalos in sight though, perhaps they’ve popped down the river for a drink. It’s a good view though and helps give the game a really good look.
In all there are five reels in this game with three rows of symbols and a bumper 40 paylines for you to try and get some winning combinations on. Those 40 paylines aren’t fixed so before you spin the reels, you have to decide your coin level and how many of the paylines to activate. The cost of playing the game ranges from just £0.01 up to £40, a decent range so you shouldn’t have any problems finding a level you can comfortably play at.
The symbols in the game are a mixture of those that are related to the Way Out West buffalo theme and those that aren’t. We get a white buffalo and a black buffalo, prairie wagons, a coyote howling so much it’ll keep any neighbours up all night, a totemic American Eagle, thunderbolts, a rock that has a birds shadow on it, cavalry hats and native head-dresses. Then we get the Nine to Ace playing card symbols making up the rest of the symbols and being the low payers as far as winning combinations go.
The Buffalo Thunder logo is the wild symbol in this game. It can substitute for all of the other symbols in the game with the exception of the scatter symbol. That really helps get you some winning combinations that wouldn’t otherwise have happened. It’s even more likely to do that when it’s stacked and covers several reels. The scatter is the totem and this helps get you into the bonus game as will shortly be explained.
All the information about how much each winning combination pays plus full details about what the wild and scatter symbols, how the bonus game works and where the paylines are can be found in the paytable. Once you’ve gone through that you’re nearly ready to play the game and try and get some wins. Have some free games first though just to see how the game runs when the reels start to spin.
All the main control buttons are down the bottom of the screen so operating it is no problem at all which is always useful. It’s also possible to set an autoplay feature to help give you some time away from the reels. All the automated spins will be at the same stake level so just make sure you can afford them.
In order to trigger some free spins, you need to get special placement of the Totem scatter symbol. This has to end up on the second, third and fourth reels in order to qualify you for five free spins of the reels. That might not sound very many and of course it’s not, however if those scatters turn up again you can re-trigger the free spins.
In the base game if you get a winning combination, then there’s a decision to make. Do you take the win and carry on to the next spin or gamble it? If you decide to try and win some more cash, then you have to guess the colour of the next card. A 50//50 chance of course to win and lose. Just be careful with this as it really is an easy way to waste some good wins.
One of Novomatic’s older games but it has plenty of appeal. The theme is a good one and well adhered to. The bonus game isn’t too hard to trigger and definitely worth it when you start playing. The stacked wilds are also a good gateway to some tidy profits so this is definitely recommended.
