We’re off to the American Southwest for this entertaining game from Novomatic. The slot world has featured many different kinds of animals in the past. We’ve had everything from rhinos to rabbits, cats to cougars and here it’s the turn of the armadillo to take centre stage.
This game has a total of five reels and there are 25 paylines which is a fixed amount. Your only decision therefore is to settle on a stake for each spin of the reels. Simply do your best to work out a budget that you feel entirely comfortable with. Playing the game costs between £0.25 and £250 so that’s ideal if you just want to have some fun or are a high roller looking for big wins.
Our hero Armadillo Artie comes from the desert areas in Texas, USA. We can see that in the backdrop to the reels. This helps with the theme and gives the game a bright and cheerful look. The soundtrack is fine if you’re into banjo music, if not then thankfully you can press the mute button.
The symbols in this game include a cactus, a bright red roadrunner, a bull’s head which is mounted up on a board, a snake that for some reason is dressed as a sheriff (perhaps it was fancy dress night) and an opossum that looks a little bit nervous, perhaps he’s scared of ending up like the bull.
The wild symbol in this game is the one that has Armadillo Artie written in huge gold letters with Texas in the background. This can substitute for other symbols in the game to get you some good wins. There are two symbols it can’t substitute for and that’s the Free Games symbol and the Bonus Bowl-O-Ram Bowling Game symbol. This wild can be really useful though as it’s an expanding one and that really increases your chances of getting plenty of wins. It has the ability to expand horizontally so any symbol to the right in the same row can be substituted.
There’s a fair amount happening in this game so make sure you look through the paytable. This comes up on a separate screen and gives you valuable information about winning combinations and how to get into the bonus games and what happens when you do. Once you’ve read that also try to have some free games. It always helps to see the game in action.
The game also has an autoplay feature that can set up to 50 automated spins of the reels. However, if you go for the advanced option then you can set plenty more and get them to stop at specified figures. For example, you can get the automated spins to stop when a certain win has been achieved that you want to protect.
Ten free spins are awarded when three of the Free Game sheriff’s badge symbols land on the second, third or fourth reels. During the free spins wins are paid in both directions but it’s not possible to re-trigger the free spins.
While you are in the free spins there’s the opportunity to trigger the Bowl-O-Rama Bonus Game. To do this you need to get two of the Bowling Pin bonus symbols appear on the second, third or fourth reels. Once that has been achieved, you get to see a set of bowling pins. Armadillo Artie then shows off a strange talent of his. He can curl himself up into a ball and you can choose in which way he goes rolling towards the bowling pins. The more pins he manages to knock down the more you win. It does have to be said at this point that no armadillos were injured in the making of this slot. Not sure about that bull though.
A really good game from Novomatic. The theme is a really fun one and well executed unless you really despise the banjo. The bonus games can be highly profitable and the Bowl-O-Rama Bonus Game is a good laugh. Definitely recommended.
