The War of the Worlds review

No one would have believed in the 19th century that one day HG Well’s ‘The War of the Worlds‘ would become a moviealbum and stage show. Nor did anyone imagine it’d become a hugely successful LP and now a video slots game.It was back in 1978 that Jeff Wayne released his musical version of ‘The War of the Worlds’ and it stormed its way up both the singles and album charts. A subsequent stage show was produced decades later and this Ash Gaming slots game celebrates this.

‘The War of the Worlds’ is a five-reel, four-row, 100 payline game which is a fixed amount that has to be played. The coin range goes from £0.01 to £3 so a maximum spin is £300. That’s a hefty amount to gamble on one spin but if you can afford it you can win some massive prizes. If you stake the maximum bet and get five tripods you can win £5000.The music is dramatic and fits in well with those Martian tripods marching but it’s the look of the game that is really attractive totally fitting in with the theme and mood. We see several paintings from artists such as Geoff Taylor, Michael Trim and Peter Goodfellow that tell the story of the alien invasion. As for the symbols we have Richard Burton’s floating head, an observatory that spots the Martians, a laser, alien space ship, those amazing Martin tripods, birds, burning houses, the death rays and the Jack to Ace playing cards. A bit disappointing because there are plenty more characters that could have been used.

There’s also the War of the Worlds symbol which is the wild in this game. It substitutes for all the regular symbols but not the Bonus scatter symbol. If your luck is in and you get two wild symbols on one reel then they’ll expand and fill the entire reel giving you the chance to get some great wins. This is an easy game to operate with all the control buttons down the bottom of the screen. A quick look through the paytable and having some free plays will certainly help prepare you before the real war begins.

Bonus Features

There’s only one bonus game in ‘The War of the Worlds’, well there is a war on you know. That’s the Fighting Machines bonus game where you finally get the chance to fight back against the alien invaders.Getting one up on those Martians is always going to be important in this game, and you can do just that in the Fighting Machines Bonus. To activate this you need to get three of the Bonus scatters on the reels at the end of a spin. Now you can battle the Martians and see if you can shoot down the Fighting Machines that have wreaked so much terror. If you manage to survive an attack with all of your cannons remaining then onto the next battle you go. In all this has three stages and the better you do the wealthier you’ll become. This isn’t the easiest of bonus games to trigger but it’s certainly worth it when you can.

This is another impressive release from Ash Gaming. The Victorian feel to the game mixed in with the images from the Jeff Wayne album give it a great look. The bonus game is an entertaining one once you finally manage to trigger it.
